THE DREAM, THE JOURNEY

FROM VINE TO GLASS

Set just 6.5km from the heart of Beechworth, Baarmutha Wines is the result of a long-held vision — one that began over two decades ago with the purchase of 45 acres of gently undulating land, and a quiet determination to contribute something meaningful to one of Australia’s most revered wine regions.

From the outset, the focus has been on thoughtful, site-driven viticulture. Careful planning underpins everything in the vineyard — from wide 3-metre row spacing and 1.5-metre vine spacing, to maximise airflow and sunlight, through to hands-on practices like mulching, hand weeding and detailed canopy management. The aim is simple: grow healthy, balanced fruit with minimal intervention, allowing the site to speak clearly in the glass.

Varieties were chosen with Beechworth’s strengths firmly in mind. Alongside classics like Riesling, Chardonnay, Sangiovese, and Shiraz, we've embraced Sagrantino — a variety that thrives in the region’s warm days and cool nights, producing wines of depth and structure. The first vines went into the ground in 2006, with rootstocks such as Richter 110 and Paulsen selected for their drought tolerance and ability to moderate vigour. Clonal choices, including Chardonnay 76 and 95, reflect a preference for wines of texture, structure and quiet complexity.

Harvest remains one of the most important moments of the year — and one of the most personal. In good seasons, fruit is handpicked in the cool of the morning by friends and family, a ritual that speaks to the scale and spirit of the vineyard. From there, the approach in the winery is measured and respectful: open ferments for Sangiovese, Shiraz and Sagrantino, barrel fermentation for Chardonnay, and maturation in seasoned oak to preserve purity and detail.

Ferments are guided carefully to protect natural yeast expression, capturing the nuance of each vintage. The wines then rest underground for up to 18 months, with minimal handling — just one or two gentle rackings — before being meticulously bench blended and bottled.

At our core, Baarmutha Wines is about patience, precision and place. A quiet, considered expression of Beechworth — shaped by the land, the season, and the people behind it.

Cheers,

Vinny Webb, vigneron.
